What makes a fashion show (part 1) – the casting

Modeling 101 is a fantastic blog with lots of great information for both aspiring and experienced models – and that’s the source for this post. Here’s some highlights from the first part of a series written by the blog’s author, Dania Denise, on modeling in fashion shows.

“Being in a fashion show is perhaps one of the biggest goals that new and aspiring models hope to achieve. The thought of getting to wear a designer’s fashions, getting your hair and makeup professionally done and strutting your way down a catwalk in front of an audience is a vision that many model hopefuls replay over and over in their heads. Of course to better prepare yourself… it is important to not only know what role you play as a model, but understand the other aspects that go into making a fashion show possible.”

Dania has the following advice for castings (and we’ve added one or two points of our own):

1. Research the designer – find out as much as you can about who you may be walking for and his/her work.

2. Find out what the dress code will be - if there’s no information, choose an outfit that shows off your natural shape and is easy to move around in (a form-fitting dress without a distracting pattern or skinny jeans and a form-fitting shirt or tank top for women and jeans with comfortable shoes (that are clean and not scuffed up) and a fitted shirt. High heels (not platforms) are a must for women and the men should be well-groomed.

3. Find out what else you’ll need to bring with you - you may need a headshot, your comp card or your portfolio. If you’re not sure, bring them anyway!

4. Practice - this is particularly important if you’re inexperienced or your walk needs a little work.

5. Arrive early – unless you’re a late addition, there may be many models at the casting and arriving early helps put you towards the front of the line.

6. Be prepared to wait – bring something to help pass the time but won’t be a distraction from what’s going on.

7. Pay attention to whoever is leading the casting – and follow their directions closely.

8. Be confident and show a lot of energy – if you’ve got “it”, it will show in your walk.

9. Be prepared to answer questions – these could be on how long you’ve been modeling, previous shows you’ve done, and your availability for the rehearsals, fittings and the date of the show itself. Think about how to project your persoanlity through your answers.

10. When the casting is over – be sure to thank the casting people.

Here’s Sophie!

Our web designer will soon be back from her Christmas/New Year vacation so you’ll soon be able to see our models on their very own pages. In the meantime, here’s another of our models that we’d like to introduce you to (or reintroduce you to in some cases). Sophie is a brilliant, versatile model – as fantastic on the runway as she is in print. And here’s a sample of some of her work.

Mario Testino – an interview, a gallery, and a look behind the scenes at a Vogue covershoot

Mario Testino is one of the world’s greatest photographers. His glamorous photographs have been a fixture on the pages of Vogue (and too many other magazines to mention) for over twenty years. In fact, he’s one of British Vogue’s most prolific cover photographers – he’s been at the helm of over 60!

Just in case you missed it, in April 2013 he took to the stage at the Vogue Festival with fashion director Lucinda Chambers to talk about how he became one of the world’s most famous photographers. You can watch the interview in full here.

Also on the Vogue website is a gallery featuring more than 100 of Mario’s most iconic shots – you can find it here.

And as a special bonus, here’s a look behind the scenes at a shoot Mario did with Gisele Bündchen for the cover of Vogue UK’s December 2011 issue.

Why Elektra Yu is one in a million!

Okay – that’s just a slight exaggeration. But she’s certainly one in several thousand, as you’ll see in this preview of Cycle 2 of Asia’s Next Top Model (beginning on Star World on January 8). Just take a look at this video to see how many hopefuls Elektra beat out to become the Hong Kong representative – and you may even catch a glimpse of Elektra.

You can contact us about Elektra at info@360degreemodels.com.

It’s cold outside, so take a look at the Spring campaigns!

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s feeling a lot like winter. So, to warm you up, here are some early images from the Spring ad campaigns, courtesy of fashionologie and the respective fashion designers. Aspiring models take note – great images and great modeling follow!

Models and the rise of social media

Earlier this month, we posted on an article in Glamour magazine on models and social media (you can read that post here). This morning, thanks to Twitter (follow us at @360degreemodels), we came across an article from the Wall Street Journal which picks up many of the same themes, and has a few additional points to make. Here are some of the highlights…

Jourdan Dunn has about 218,200 Instagram followers

Jourdan Dunn: “Social media is all about branding. People will forget about your talent and talk about your tweets. I feel you have to be careful.”

Stephan Moskovic (co-founder and editor of Models.com): “It can be a big plus for a brand if they sign up a model that has a large following.”

Ivan Bart (senior vice president and managing director of IMG Models): “When you walk into a brand and you say ‘what about her, what about him?’ they now ask ‘how many followers do they have?’… When you want a spokesperson or face of your brand, you want to know they will sell the brand. Are they connecting, are they relevant, who are they relevant to?”

Liu Wen (the first Asian model to be a face of Estée Lauder cosmetics, and who has more than 100,000 followers on Instagram and a large following on Weibo): “I think a great part my current success was due to my presence on social media.”

Coco Rocha: “Celebrities have taken so many of our jobs. Now you can see how many people are following a model. It means something to a company.”

The article is short, but a great piece to get you thinking over the holidays – you can read it in full at Wall Street Journal. And we’ll be working with our own models on their social media presence (and ours) in 2014 – but in the meantime, be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

Introducing Kaitlin

You may have already seen Elektra and Sasha and all of our models will have their own pages just as soon as our wonderful website designers, Analog, come back from their well-deserved Christmas break. In the meantime, though, here’s Kaitlin…

Marc Jacobs’ all-star Louis Vuitton finale

louis-vuitton-vogue-Fan Bing Bing

Vogue.co.uk (and many others) have covered Marc Jacobs’ final campaign for Louis Vuitton, but we thought we’d give it some attention here as well, as the images are truly stunning. Featured in his final campaign are his fashion muses – Catherine Deneuve, Sofia Coppola, Gisele Bündchen, Fan Bingbing, Caroline de Maigret and Edie Campbell.

The campaign was shot by the brilliant Steven Meisel and you’ll see the images in the spring/summer 2014 advertising campaign. In every single shot, as Vogue describes it “each woman smoulders for the camera” and models the label’s most famous designs.

We’ve included a few of the images here but, to see more, head off to the Vogue UK website. And head off to models.com to see more of the work of each of these models and find out who represents them.
